Google Local Services Ads Will Charge For Missed Calls On October 1
Published August 31, 2026
Starting October 1, 2026, a missed Local Services Ads call that rings longer than 20 seconds during your business hours can be charged as a valid lead, even when nobody picks up. Follow-up calls can be charged too. Tighten your posted business hours to the hours you can actually answer the phone, and make sure your conversion tracking for local websites is clean so you can tell what October actually changed.
Google Is Auto-Expanding AI Overviews And Dropping The Show More Button
Published August 31, 2026
On some queries the AI Overview now loads fully expanded with no button to click, which pushes organic results further down the page. Your rankings can hold perfectly steady while your clicks fall, so this one is invisible if you only watch average position. If organic click-through keeps compressing on your commercial terms, it is worth revisiting whether SEO or Google Ads should come first.
Google Merged Google Tag Into Tag Manager And Added No-Code Conversion Tracking
Published August 31, 2026
Google tags are now full Tag Manager containers, and visual tagging lets you build a conversion event by clicking the element on your own site instead of writing selectors. Container optimization is optional and prompted by a banner, so nothing changes until you accept it. Easier setup is not the same as correct setup, so decide which conversion actions are actually worth tracking before you start clicking buttons.
Google's Site Reputation Abuse Policy Now Works Differently In The EEA
Published August 31, 2026
Google rewrote the parasite SEO policy effective August 30, 2026. Outside the EEA, manual actions still directly affect rankings for the affected section. Inside the EEA, Google separates that section so it ranks independently instead. Google also named four factors it evaluates, which finally gives you a real checklist for auditing any third-party content you host, and a reason to put the effort into content you actually own.
Google Expands Demand Gen With Messaging Ads, Travel Tools, And AI Video
Published August 31, 2026
Three Demand Gen updates landed on August 27, 2026 at different stages. The AI video workflow in Asset Studio and the personalized travel inventory are live now, while messaging ads on YouTube are still in testing. Test the video workflow first, since creative is the real bottleneck on upper funnel campaigns, not targeting.

Google Merchant Center Will Require 500x500 Product Images
Published August 24, 2026
Google is requiring product images of at least 500 x 500 pixels in Merchant Center starting January 31, 2027, and recommending 1500 x 1500 or larger. The warnings are already live in your account, so you can build your fix list today instead of waiting for the deadline. Start with your best sellers and work down, then check how the changes land across your Shopping campaign structure.
Google Ads Adds Cross-Campaign A/B Testing To AI Max
Published August 24, 2026
Google is rolling out three new testing and forecasting features for AI Max in Search campaigns. Cross-campaign A/B testing arrives in September 2026, and you can now run AI Max experiments with your brand and location controls still turned on. That last part matters, because it means you can finally test AI Max without giving up the guardrails you put in place.
Google Ads Cuts The Wait Time For Maximize Conversion Value
Published August 24, 2026
Google quietly shortened its recommended wait before switching to Maximize Conversion Value bidding, from four weeks or three conversion cycles down to one or two. Shorter is not automatically better, and the shorter window is only safe when you have enough conversion volume behind it. Read up on how the different bidding strategies behave before you make the switch.
Google Is Building Calculators Inside AI Overviews
Published August 24, 2026
Google is expanding Generative UI from AI Mode into AI Overviews, so it can now build calculators and interactive tools directly into ordinary search results. If your traffic depends on a calculator, converter, or comparison page, that is the kind of page Google can now answer without sending anyone to you. Start tracking your AI visibility on those queries so you can see it happening.

Published August 24, 2026
Google's August 2026 spam update finished rolling out on August 21 after starting August 18, applying globally and to all languages. Google called it a routine spam update with nothing new attached. Before you assume it hit you, check your timing against the May 2026 core update and rule out the simpler explanations first.
