On September 4, 2026, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT Ads into more countries and shipped a batch of audience, measurement, and reporting features that make it look like a real ad platform instead of a test. Some of the most interesting pieces are still coming later. Here is what is live now, what is not, and how it compares to the way you already run Google Ads.
Where ChatGPT Ads Runs Now
OpenAI extended ChatGPT Ads to select countries across Europe, India, the Middle East, and North Africa. The announcement did not name the specific countries, so if you advertise internationally you will need to check availability in the interface for the markets you care about.
That is the headline, but the tooling that shipped alongside it is the more useful story.
What Is Live Right Now
The audience side got the most attention. You can now add, remove, or replace members in an existing audience without rebuilding it from scratch, and you can mix different identifier types in a single request.
- Audiences above 5 million members. The platform now supports lists larger than the old ceiling.
- Relaxed exclusion audience restrictions. More flexibility in how you suppress people you do not want to reach.
- Granular audience size estimates. You can see how big a segment actually is before you commit budget to it.
- Google Advertising ID support. GAID is now a usable identifier, including Android GAID through the Conversions API.
Measurement moved too. The Measurement Pixel now accepts hashed customer data including phone numbers, names, regions, and postal codes. The Conversions API supports additional identifiers on top of that.
For anyone running a product feed, reporting got noticeably better. Product feed advertisers now get impressions and clicks at the carousel card level, and product level fields are available through the Insights API. There is also a ChatGPT Ads Manager plugin that lets you create and optimize campaigns using natural language.
The Reporting Detail Worth Circling
Card impressions are counted separately from billable impressions. Read that twice before you build a reporting dashboard.
If you pull card impressions into a spreadsheet and divide your spend by that number, you will calculate a CPM that has nothing to do with what you actually paid. This is the kind of small definitional difference that quietly ruins a channel comparison, and it is exactly why I always want to know how a platform counts an impression before I trust its numbers.
What Is Not Available Yet
Two of the features that would matter most to a performance advertiser are still on the roadmap, not in the product.
- A conversion optimization model that weighs click-through and view-through conversions. Announced as coming, not shipped.
- Impression-based billing with automated optimization toward conversion goals. Also coming later.
Keep in mind, that second one is the real unlock. Automated bidding toward a conversion goal is what turned Google Ads and Meta into channels you could scale without babysitting. Until ChatGPT Ads has it, you are managing the platform manually, and you should budget your own time accordingly.
My Take On Whether To Test It
I would test it, at the very least with a small budget, if you are already seeing meaningful ChatGPT referral traffic. The measurement is now good enough that you can tell whether it worked, which was not true a few months ago.
What I would not do is treat this as a channel that replaces anything. You have manual campaign management, no conversion-goal bidding yet, and a young auction. That combination means your cost per acquisition is going to be volatile, and you need enough patience and enough budget to see through the noise.
The audience tooling is where I would start. If you already have clean first-party lists, the ability to upload hashed customer data and get real size estimates means you can test against people you already know rather than guessing at cold targeting. If your lists are not in good shape, fix that first. The work you put into using first-party data pays off on every platform, and the way you would build a Customer Match audience in Google Ads translates directly.
The good news? None of this is urgent. The platform is getting better, not going away, and waiting a quarter for conversion-goal bidding is a defensible decision. In the meantime, it is worth tracking your visibility in AI search results so you know whether your audience is actually in ChatGPT to begin with.
Question to Answer:
Do you know how much traffic and how many conversions you are currently getting from ChatGPT, and could you tell whether a paid test moved that number?
In Summary
ChatGPT Ads expanded into select markets in Europe, India, the Middle East, and North Africa, with real improvements to audience management, hashed customer data support, and product feed reporting. Conversion-goal bidding and impression-based billing were announced but are not live yet.
If your audience is in ChatGPT and your first-party data is clean, a small test makes sense now. Just do not build a dashboard on card impressions and think you are looking at what you paid for.
