1 – Understand your goals
Brilliant ideas for businesses almost always start with goals. For creating a successful affiliate marketing site, your three main goals should be to create content, grow your website traffic, and build an audience. You cannot grow your traffic or grow an audience without useful and relevant content. During your research process, you will undoubtable see examples for affiliate marketing programs promising the opportunity to earn thousands of dollars of income in several days. But from experience, it is never that simple.
If you want to build a long-term business, you need to meet these three main goals and realize that gimmicky opportunities will not build a lasting income. When you begin to build an audience by creating relevant content and utilizing social media channels, it becomes much easier to monetize your traffic for the long term.
2 – Select an affiliate marketing niche market
One of the most important steps in beginning an affiliate business is selecting a marketing niche. There are thousands of niche markets to choose from. For example, at Surfside PPC, we have affiliate sites for beach decor and farmhouse decor. We have websites for both that we build content around almost every single day. Over time, we have been able to grow our traffic and revenue for both sites. We also utilize Google AdSense and other clickable advertising opportunities in order to increase our commissions and revenue.
There are some things you can do when you are selecting a niche. To begin, we recommend going to Amazon and reviewing different product categories under the Full Store Directory menu. In this directory, you will see a ton of different niche options, which are already broken down into categories by Amazon.
Another good product directory option for researching is eBay. Their product categories are broken down very clearly on their All Categories page. In addition, ShareASale.com has good product categories and merchant listings.
It can be difficult to know which niche marketing to choose, and if you are having trouble it is helpful to choose a product that you have interest or background in. Creating content that comes from experience is always more effective. In addition, you can also tools like the Google Keyword Planner and UberSuggest to help determine whether a niche will work for you. By reviewing search volume trends and other relevant data, you can get a good idea of correlating traffic.
While you are reviewing the different product categories, it can be helpful to click on the category and product links to see what kinds of sales opportunities there are present. Also, when you are reviewing these categories in Google Keyword Planner or UberSuggest, you want to make sure you scroll over the search volume graphs and numbers to make sure there is good volume (over 100,000) for whatever it is that you are trying to target.
It’s important to note that choosing a niche that is too large and broad can be a big mistake. Selecting a broad niche makes it more difficult for you to create all of the necessary pages and content you will need in order to run a successful program.
3 – Research to find your top 50 keywords
Once you have selected your market, you will need to dive into the research – starting with identifying the top 50 keywords associated with your niche. As we noted above, by using tools like Google Keyword Planner or UberSuggest, you can easily identify the right keywords for your niche market.
When you pull your top 50, you will need to select the keywords and download or import the list into a .csv file. These will be the top keywords that you are creating content around, so spend some time reviewing each one to development good content strategy that will build your traffic and audience.
4 – Create a website and register a domain name
Once you have completed the first three steps, you will need to create a website and register your domain name. There are quite a few hosting providers on the market that you can utilize when creating your site. At Surfside PPC, we have had success using Bluehost. Whatever service you choose, we recommend starting with the best shared hosting plan available from the provider and then upgrading plans when your site begins to development a good level of traffic.
With most services, you will usually get a free domain with your plan. And when choosing a domain name, make sure create one that is descriptive and unique. It can also be helpful to choose a name that is easy for visitors to remember.
Once you sign-up for hosting and register your domain name, you can easily and install a website provider like WordPress to create your site.
5 – Create social media accounts and an email list
Once you have your website and domain name set up, you will need to also create social media accounts. Some of the top channels, in no necessary order, are Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, and YouTube. When creating these, you will want to make sure you are utilizing the ones that apply the most to your business. For example, for the Surfside PPC Affiliate sites Farmhouse Goals and Beachfront Décor, Pinterest is an extremely effective social media outlet due to the nature of the content.
While Facebook and Instagram can be good for mostly all brands, any social media channels are good for building your audience. So once you start creating useful content, you can begin to publish your content to your social media audience.
In addition, you will want to create an email list using a provider like Mailchimp. With Mailchimp, you can open an account for free until you reach up to 2,000; and the plans are fairly affordable beyond once you have reached the free-account limit.
If you would like more information on setting up social media business accounts, watch the Surfside PPC How to Set Up Your Social Media Tutorial on YouTube. We also have a Mailchimp Tutorial available to view with updated content for 2019.
6 – Install Google Analytics and Google Search Console
Another important step in building your affiliate site is utilizing Google Analytics and Google Search Console on your website. These free tools will allow you to monitor your website traffic performance in the Google search engine.
You can understand where your traffic comes from, who is visiting your site, the pages they are visiting, and more. This information is extremely helpful for you so you can continue to grow your website.
If you are unfamiliar with either of these tools, we also have separate tutorials for Google Search Console and Google Analytics on the Surfside PPC YouTube Channel.
7 – Create website content based around top 50 keywords
Once you are ready; you will need to begin to create content based on your top 50 keywords; which you have already downloaded. One way to stay organized is to develop a content creation plan. We recommend adding at least 50 high-quality blog articles over a 3-4-month span to get started. Going down the list one-by-one, you should create an article or post based around each keyword. For example, if you look at our Farmhouse Goals blog and look down the list of entries, each one was based around a top 50 keyword that we pulled when we created the site.
If you don’t have the time or expertise to create meaningful content, it is helpful to look to outsourcing with services like Upwork. With Upwork, you can hire a professional copywriter to create good articles for your site. Another resource we utilize is the Content Marketing Institute. They provide very helpful articles and links to information that will help you with content creation. Another good tactic to employ is viewing your competitor sites to see what kind of articles and blogs they are creating and make sure you are keeping pace.
This can be the most challenging step. Your ultimate goal is to create the best content online so you can rank high in search engines. You want the content to be relevant and interesting for people who are visiting your site. This will help continue to drive people to your website.
8 – Apply for affiliate networks and Google AdSense
As you start getting traffic to your website with content, we highly recommend that you apply for affiliate networks and Google AdSense. With these tools you can start monetizing your website traffic, but you need traffic before you will earn any money. It is difficult to be accepted into the top affiliate networks and Google AdSense, so getting your traffic higher is extremely important.
While getting accepted requires traffic, the initial sign-up process with Google AdSense is quite easy. Simply visit the site, click “Sign Up” and you will be prompted to enter your website URL and email address. Another good affiliate option is Amazon Associates. This is an affiliate marketing program, similar to Google AdSense. It’s free for website owners and bloggers to become Amazon Associates and they can advertise products from Amazon.com on their sites by creating links. When customers click the links and buy products from Amazon, they earn referral fees.
9 – Create and share content every day
We have talked about content quite a bit, but we can’t stress how important this component is. Affiliate marketing is not as easy as 1-2-3. We covered this in the article earlier, but when you see ads from so-called experts and gurus promising $200+ per day in a short period of time, this is unrealistic and unsustainable.
At Surfside PPC, and with our affiliate sites, we create content every single morning and share that content on social media and to our email subscribers. With tools like Crowdfire and Hootsuite, you can easily share content across all of your channels on at once. With email marketing, we have an email template in Mailchimp that we utilize to send relevant content to our email list.
10 – Keep working hard and smart
We do like to give helpful tips and information in our articles, but we also like to be realistic about the process. Affiliate marketing takes time and work; and sometimes it can be frustrating and difficult. But if you follow the strategies outlined above and educate yourself on WordPress or another web provider, content creation, social media strategies, traffic strategies, search engine optimization, and email marketing, you will begin to see a return on your investment; regardless of whether you need to outsource.
Work on your content every day, work hard and smart, and you will see positive results. If you would like more information, including access to our Affiliate Marketing Course, we invite you to subscribe to the Surfside PPC YouTube Channel.
