What Is Cost Per Lead (CPL)?

Cost per lead (CPL) is the average amount you pay in ad spend to get one lead, such as a form fill or a phone call. Google Ads reports it as cost per conversion, often called cost per acquisition (CPA). You calculate it by dividing your total ad cost by your total conversions.

Google's Definition

"The average amount you've been charged for a conversion from your ad."

CPL vs CPA

The math is the same. CPL is the term most lead generation businesses use, and CPA is the broader term for any conversion, including a sale. In your account, the column is called Cost / conv.

Your CPL is really two numbers combined: your CPC divided by your conversion rate. If either one improves, your CPL drops.

Cost Per Lead (CPL) Example

Example

You spend $3,000 this month and get 45 leads. Your CPL is $3,000 divided by 45, or $66.67 per lead.

The same math works from the other direction. A $5.42 click with an 8.18% conversion rate works out to about $66 per lead.

The 2026 median cost per lead across all industries is $66.69, according to the WordStream by LocaliQ 2026 Google Ads Benchmarks report.

Why It Matters

  • It ties ads to revenue: If you know what a customer is worth, CPL tells you whether your ads are profitable.
  • It is the number to bid on: Target CPA bidding uses this number as its goal.
  • It compares channels: You can compare Google Ads, Local Services Ads and Meta Ads on the same cost per lead basis.

How to Improve It

  1. Raise your conversion rate. A better landing page lowers CPL without touching your bids.
  2. Cut wasted clicks. Negative keywords remove spend that never produces a lead.
  3. Count real leads only. Spam forms and short calls make your CPL look better than it is.
  4. Set a realistic target. Use the Google Ads budget calculator to work out a CPL you can afford.
