What Is Conversion Rate?
Conversion rate is the percentage of ad clicks that turn into a conversion, such as a lead form, a phone call or a purchase. You calculate it by dividing your conversions by your clicks. It tells you how well your landing page and offer turn visitors into customers, and it only works if your conversion tracking is set up correctly.
Google's Definition
"The average number of conversions per ad interaction, shown as a percentage."

What Counts as a Conversion
A conversion is any action you decide is valuable. Google describes it this way: A conversion is an action used to measure the performance of your ad campaigns and optimize your bidding strategy.

Conversion Tracking Comes First
Your conversion rate is only as accurate as your tracking. If you count every phone button tap as a lead, your rate looks great and your results do not. Track the actions that matter, like submitted forms and calls over 60 seconds, and set them as your primary conversions.
If you have not done this yet, start with how to set up Google Ads conversion tracking, then tracking phone calls and lead forms.
Conversion Rate Example
Example
Your campaign gets 400 clicks this month and 32 of those people fill out your form. Your conversion rate is 32 divided by 400, or 8%.
The 2026 median conversion rate across all industries is 8.18%, according to the WordStream by LocaliQ 2026 Google Ads Benchmarks report.
Why It Matters
- It sets your cost per lead: Doubling your conversion rate cuts your cost per lead in half at the same CPC.
- It feeds Smart Bidding: Google's bidding uses your conversion data to decide who to bid on.
- It shows landing page problems: A good CTR with a poor conversion rate usually means the page is the issue.
How to Improve It
- Send each ad to a matching page. The page should answer the exact search that led to the click.
- Make the next step obvious. Put a clear form or call button above the fold.
- Cut slow load times. A slow page loses people before they read a word.
- Clean up your tracking. Remove duplicate or low-value actions from your primary conversions.
