What Is Cost Per Click (CPC)?
Cost per click (CPC) is the amount you pay each time someone clicks your Google Ads ad. You set a maximum bid, but your actual CPC is usually lower, because Google Ads charges only what you need to hold your position in the auction. Your average CPC is your total cost divided by your total clicks.
Google's Definition
"Cost-per-click (CPC) bidding means that you pay for each click on your ads."

How Your CPC Is Set
Your actual CPC comes out of the ad auction. Google Ads looks at your bid, the quality of your ad and landing page, and the context of the search, then charges you the minimum needed to keep your spot.
That is why two advertisers with the same maximum bid can pay very different prices. The advertiser with the more relevant ad usually pays less per click.
Cost Per Click (CPC) Example
Example
You spend $1,000 in a month and your ads get 200 clicks. Your average CPC is $1,000 divided by 200, or $5.00 per click.
At that rate, a $3,000 monthly budget buys you roughly 600 clicks.
For context, the 2026 median CPC across all industries is $5.42, according to the WordStream by LocaliQ 2026 Google Ads Benchmarks report. Competitive industries such as legal run much higher, so compare your numbers to your own industry first.
Why It Matters
- Budget reach: Your CPC decides how many clicks your budget can buy each month.
- Cost per lead: Your CPC divided by your conversion rate gives you your cost per lead, so a lower CPC lowers what each lead costs you.
- Early warning: A sudden jump in CPC often points to a new competitor or a drop in ad quality.
How to Improve It
- Raise your Quality Score. More relevant ads and landing pages usually earn a lower price for the same position.
- Cut wasted searches. Review your search terms and add negative keywords so you stop paying for clicks that never convert.
- Tighten your match types. Broad keywords pull in expensive searches you did not plan for, so start tighter and expand on purpose.
- Plan with real numbers. Use the Google Ads budget calculator to see what your CPC means for clicks and leads.
