What Is Ad Rank?

Ad Rank is the set of values Google Ads uses to decide whether your ad can show at all and where it appears on the page. It is recalculated in every auction, using your bid, the quality of your ad and landing page, the context of the search, and the expected impact of your assets.

Google's Definition

"Ad Rank is a set of values that are used to determine whether your ads are eligible to show and if eligible, where on the page your ads are shown"

What Goes Into Ad Rank

Ad Rank is not a number you can see in your account. It is calculated fresh every time someone searches, which is why your position moves around during the day.

  • Your bid: The most you are willing to pay for a click.
  • Ad and landing page quality: How relevant and useful your ad and page are to that search.
  • Ad Rank thresholds: The minimum quality your ad needs to show at all.
  • Search context and assets: The device, location and time of the search, plus the expected impact of your sitelinks, calls and other assets.

Ad Rank Example

Example

This is a simplified illustration, since Google does not publish the exact formula. Advertiser A bids $6.00 with a weak, generic ad. Advertiser B bids $4.50 with a highly relevant ad and a matching landing page. Advertiser B can still win the higher position, and often pays less per click to hold it.

Why It Matters

  • Visibility: If your Ad Rank falls below the threshold, your ad does not show, no matter how much budget you have left.
  • Position: A higher Ad Rank puts you above competitors, where more people see and click your ad.
  • Cost: Better quality lets you win positions without simply raising your bid.

How to Improve It

  1. Improve ad relevance. Write headlines that match each ad group's keywords.
  2. Fix the landing page. Send people to a fast page that answers their search.
  3. Add assets. Sitelinks, callouts and call assets count toward Ad Rank.
  4. Check lost impression share. The rank column tells you how often a low Ad Rank kept your ad off the page.
