Google Expands Demand Gen With Messaging Ads, Travel Tools, And AI Video

Google expands Demand Gen with messaging ads, travel tools, and AI video creation

Google announced a round of Demand Gen updates on August 27, 2026, covering messaging ads on YouTube, personalized travel inventory, and AI video creation inside Asset Studio. Two of the three are available now and one is still in testing, which matters if you are planning campaigns around them. Here is what each one does and which you can actually use today.

What Google Announced

Three things came out of this announcement, and they are at different stages. Read the availability on each one carefully before you build a plan around it.

  • Messaging apps integration. In testing. Lets someone start a conversation with your business through a messaging app directly from a Demand Gen ad on YouTube. Google describes the goal as letting a prospect move directly into a conversation rather than navigating through a more traditional conversion path. This one is not generally available.
  • Personalized travel advertising. Available now. Surfaces local activities, events, real-time offers, and personalized hotel properties to relevant audiences.
  • Multimodal video creation in Asset Studio. Available now, with expanded access. An AI video workflow that takes you from storyboarding through production and produces both horizontal and vertical assets in a single pass.

Google also shared a performance figure alongside the announcement. The company says the hundreds of Demand Gen improvements it introduced during the second half of 2025 are, on average, driving a 30% increase in conversions or conversion value for advertisers. That is Google's own number, and it covers last year's changes, not the three features announced here.

The Video Tool Is The One To Try First

If you only have time to test one of these, test the video workflow in Asset Studio.

The reason is simple. Creative is the bottleneck on Demand Gen, not targeting. Most advertisers I talk to have one horizontal video, maybe two, and they are running them across every placement because producing a vertical cut means going back to an editor and waiting a week. Getting both orientations out of one workflow removes the excuse for running a single asset everywhere.

Keep in mind, AI video gets you volume, not quality. A workflow that produces ten mediocre videos faster than you could produce one good one is only a win if you are actually testing them against each other and cutting the losers. If you upload ten assets and never look at asset-level performance, you have automated your way into the same problem.

Messaging Ads Are Interesting But You Cannot Plan On Them

The messaging integration is the most genuinely new idea in the announcement, and it is the one you cannot use yet.

The pitch makes sense for high-consideration services. Somebody watching a YouTube video about a home renovation is not ready to fill out a seven-field form, but they might send a message asking whether you cover their area. Cutting the landing page out of that path could work well for local service businesses.

My honest read is to file it and wait. It is in testing, Google has not published a general availability date, and features at this stage change or quietly disappear. I would not restructure anything around it. If it reaches your account, treat it as a new lead source with its own quality problem to solve, because a message thread is a much lower-commitment action than a form fill and your lead quality will reflect that.

Where Demand Gen Fits Right Now

Demand Gen is where Google has been pushing Display Network budget for a while, and this announcement is more of that direction. The upper funnel gets more automation, more creative generation, and fewer manual levers.

That means the work that is left for you sits on either side of the campaign. On the front end it is creative, offers, and audience inputs. On the back end it is measurement and knowing what an upper-funnel conversion is actually worth to you.

If you are running Demand Gen alongside Performance Max, watch for overlap before you scale either one. Both campaign types can serve the same person across YouTube and Display, and I have seen accounts credit the same conversion twice and then increase spend on the strength of it. Your remarketing audiences are usually where that collision shows up first.

The travel features are narrow. If you are not in travel or hospitality, there is nothing to do with that one. If you are, personalized hotel properties and real-time offers are live now and worth a test this month.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is treating every Google announcement as something that requires action in your Google Ads account this week. Most of them do not. Two features here are live, one is not, and only one of the live ones applies to most businesses.

Question to Answer:

How many distinct video assets are running in your Demand Gen campaigns right now, and do you have a vertical cut of each one?

In Summary

Of the three Demand Gen updates announced on August 27, the AI video workflow in Asset Studio and the personalized travel inventory are available now. Messaging ads on YouTube are still in testing, so do not build a plan around them yet.

Test the video workflow, get a vertical asset for every horizontal one you are running, and then check your asset-level performance before you add more. Volume without a cut list is not an improvement.
