What Is Remarketing?

Remarketing, also called retargeting, shows your ads to people who already visited your website, used your app or interacted with your business. Google Ads now calls these audiences your data segments. Because these people already know you, remarketing ads often convert at a lower cost than ads to brand new audiences.

Google's Definition

"Use your data to re-engage people who have previously interacted with your brand or services on mobile or desktop."

How Remarketing Works

A Google tag on your website adds visitors to a list. You can then show ads to that list on YouTube, Display, Gmail and Search, or bid higher when those people search again.

You can build lists from your website visitors, YouTube viewers, app users and customer email lists you upload.

Remarketing Example

Example

Your site gets 1,000 visitors from ads this month and 30 of them contact you. The other 970 leave. A remarketing campaign brings 60 of them back over the next few weeks, and 9 of those become leads, for a 15% conversion rate on returning visitors.

Why It Matters

  • Most visitors do not convert the first time: Remarketing gives you a second chance at people you already paid to reach.
  • Warm audiences convert better: People who know your business are more likely to take the next step.
  • It supports longer decisions: High-ticket services often need several visits before someone reaches out.

How to Improve It

  1. Segment your lists. Treat people who viewed a service page differently from people who bounced from the homepage.
  2. Exclude converters. Stop showing the same offer to people who already became customers.
  3. Cap frequency. Too many impressions annoy people instead of bringing them back.
  4. Match the message to the visit. Remind people of the exact service they looked at.
