1The Results at a Glance

Here are the headline numbers from Google Analytics 4, comparing January through March 2026 to January through March 2025. These figures include organic search and direct sessions only. Paid search, Performance Max and other paid traffic are left out.

+62% Organic + Direct Sessions

From 18,103 sessions in Q1 2025 to 29,233 in Q1 2026.

+37% Organic Search Sessions

From 15,640 to 21,475 sessions over the same three months.

+215% Direct Sessions

From 2,463 to 7,758 sessions as more customers came back on their own.

11,130 Added Sessions

More organic and direct visits in one quarter, with no ad spend behind them.

This was not a small website starting from zero. The store was already getting more than 15,000 organic sessions a quarter. Growing an established site by 37% in organic search means winning more rankings in a market where the business already competed.

2The Client: A Local Precious Metals Store

The client is a local precious metals store that buys and sells gold, silver and other precious metals. Their customers include people looking to invest in bullion and coins and people looking to sell gold, silver or jewelry they already own.

  • Industry: Local precious metals dealer with a physical storefront.
  • Customers: Local buyers and sellers who search Google before visiting the store.
  • Why SEO matters here: Precious metals customers research before they buy or sell, and they often check back regularly. Ranking well puts the store in front of them every time they search.

3How We Measured Growth

This store also runs Google Ads. If we reported total website traffic, paid campaigns would blur what SEO actually did. So we pulled paid traffic out and measured only the sessions SEO influences.

  1. Organic search sessions counted. Visitors who found the website through Google and other search engines without clicking an ad.
  2. Direct sessions counted. Visitors who typed the website address or came back to it directly, which grows as more people find and remember the business.
  3. Paid traffic left out. Paid search, Performance Max, paid social and display sessions are excluded from the totals on this page.
  4. Same quarter, year over year. January through March 2026 is compared to January through March 2025, so seasonality does not inflate the numbers.
?
Question to AnswerWhen your agency reports SEO growth, are paid traffic sessions mixed into the totals?

4First Quarter 2026 vs First Quarter 2025

Here is the full breakdown of organic search and direct sessions for the first quarter of each year.

Channel Jan to Mar 2025 Jan to Mar 2026 Growth
Organic Search 15,640 21,475 +37%
Direct 2,463 7,758 +215%
Organic + Direct 18,103 29,233 +62%

That works out to roughly 9,700 organic and direct sessions a month in early 2026, up from about 6,000 a month a year earlier.

5Organic Search Drives the Business

For this store, organic search is not a side channel. It is the main way customers find the business. From January 2025 through mid-October 2026, Google Analytics 4 shows organic search leading every other channel.

Channel Sessions Share of Sessions Key Events Share of Key Events Key Event Rate
Organic Search 91,844 58% 13,560 81% 12.62%
Direct 38,419 24% 1,528 9% 3.36%
Paid Search 10,031 6% 730 4% 5.88%
Cross-Network 5,791 4% 360 2% 5.20%
  • 81% of all key events came from organic search: 13,560 of the 16,690 key events tracked on the website.
  • More than double the paid search key event rate: Organic sessions completed key events at 12.62%, compared to 5.88% for paid search.
  • No cost per click: Every one of those organic sessions and key events came in without paying for the click.

6The Local SEO Work Behind the Growth

Growing an established website takes consistent work across the whole site. Here is the work that went into this one.

  1. Pages built around what customers search. Buying and selling gold, silver, coins and bullion each need their own page targeting the keywords local customers actually type.
  2. Local targeting. Pages and content were built around the store's city and surrounding areas so the site could rank for "near me" and location searches.
  3. Google Business Profile optimization. The profile's categories, products and details were kept complete and consistent with the website.
  4. Technical cleanup. Indexing issues, page titles, meta descriptions and internal links were fixed so Google could crawl and understand every page.
  5. Ongoing content and updates. Pages were improved and expanded over time rather than published once and forgotten.

7Why Direct Traffic Tripled

Direct sessions grew 215%, from 2,463 to 7,758. That is the biggest percentage jump in this case study, and it fits how precious metals customers behave.

Many customers find the store through a Google search, then come back again and again to check prices, inventory or store details. Those return visits often show up as direct traffic in Google Analytics 4. As organic search brings in more new customers, more of them return directly.

  • Repeat visits: Customers who first found the store through search and came back directly to check prices or plan a visit.
  • Brand recognition: The more often the store shows up in search results, the more people type its name or address directly.
  • Why we show both: We report organic search on its own so you can see the SEO growth separately, and blended with direct so you can see the full picture.

8What Made the Difference

Here is what you can take from this case study and apply to your own local business.

  • Measure SEO without paid traffic: If your business runs ads, pull paid channels out of your reports. Otherwise you cannot tell whether your SEO is working.
  • Compare the same months year over year: Demand changes through the year. Comparing the first quarter to the first quarter tells you far more than comparing one month to the next.
  • Keep growing an established site: A site that already ranks can still grow. More pages, better pages and steady technical work add rankings on top of what you have.
  • Know where your key events come from: In this account, organic search drove 81% of key events. That is the channel worth investing in.
  • Stay consistent: SEO rewards steady work over time, not one big push.

In Summary

This local precious metals store grew its organic search and direct sessions 62% year over year, from 18,103 in the first quarter of 2025 to 29,233 in the first quarter of 2026. Organic search alone grew 37%, and since January 2025 it has driven 81% of all key events on the website.

The main takeaway is that an established website can keep growing. Build pages around what your customers search, keep your Google Business Profile and website consistent, fix the technical issues holding your site back and measure the results without paid traffic mixed in.
