A local service business came to us wanting more customers to find them without paying for every click. Comparing June through August 2026 to the same three months in 2025, sessions from organic search and direct visits grew from 1,103 to 3,525. This case study walks through how we measured that growth, what the month-by-month numbers look like and what you can apply to your own local SEO.

1The Results at a Glance
Here are the headline numbers from Google Analytics 4, comparing June through August 2026 to June through August 2025. These figures include organic search and direct sessions only. Paid search, Performance Max and other paid traffic are left out.
From 1,103 sessions in summer 2025 to 3,525 in summer 2026.
From 629 to 1,765 sessions over the same three months.
July organic and direct sessions grew from 343 to 1,272.
Organic and direct sessions from mid-September to mid-October 2026.
The growth has held up after the summer. The most recent 30 days brought in 1,286 organic and direct sessions, close to the July and August 2026 pace and more than three times the monthly level from a year earlier.
2How We Measured Growth
This business also runs Google Ads, and paid traffic makes up a large share of its total sessions. If we reported total website traffic, the paid campaigns would hide what SEO actually did. So we pulled paid traffic out and measured only the sessions SEO influences.
- Organic search sessions counted. Visitors who found the website through Google and other search engines without clicking an ad.
- Direct sessions counted. Visitors who typed the website address or came back to it directly, which grows as more people find and remember the business.
- Cross-network traffic left out. This is Performance Max and other paid campaigns that run across Google's networks.
- Paid search, paid social and display left out. Any session that came from an ad is excluded from the totals on this page.
- Same months, year over year. June through August 2026 is compared to June through August 2025, so seasonality does not inflate the numbers.
3Month-by-Month Growth
Every month in the comparison grew by more than 150%. Here is the breakdown of organic search and direct sessions for each month.
| Month | 2025 Organic + Direct | 2026 Organic + Direct | Growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| June | 366 | 939 | +157% |
| July | 343 | 1,272 | +271% |
| August | 394 | 1,314 | +234% |
| June to August Total | 1,103 | 3,525 | +220% |
The growth was not a one-month spike. It built in June, jumped in July and held in August, which is the pattern you want to see when rankings are improving across a site rather than on a single page.
4Organic Search on Its Own
If you strip out direct traffic and look only at organic search, the growth is still strong. Organic search sessions grew 181% across the three months.
| Month | 2025 Organic Search | 2026 Organic Search | Growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| June | 227 | 442 | +95% |
| July | 222 | 652 | +194% |
| August | 180 | 671 | +273% |
| June to August Total | 629 | 1,765 | +181% |
Notice the trend inside the table. Growth went from 95% in June to 273% in August. That is what SEO looks like when it compounds: each month builds on the rankings earned the month before.
5Organic Visitors Engage and Convert Better
More traffic only matters if it is the right traffic. In this account, organic search visitors engaged with the website more and completed key events at a higher rate than visitors from the paid channels.
| 2026 Period | Organic Engagement Rate | Cross-Network Engagement Rate | Organic Key Event Rate | Paid Search Key Event Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| June | 59.73% | 38.34% | 5.88% | 1.43% |
| July | 49.08% | 39.46% | 3.83% | 3.21% |
| August | 52.31% | 30.05% | 4.17% | 2.15% |
| Sep 15 to Oct 14 | 47.31% | 27.81% | 3.69% | 0.81% |
- Higher engagement every period: Organic visitors had a higher engagement rate than cross-network visitors in every period measured.
- Higher key event rate every period: Organic sessions completed key events at a higher rate than paid search sessions in every period measured.
- Leads you do not pay per click for: From June through August 2026, organic search drove 164 key events, none of which cost a click.

Talk to Us About Your Website6The Local SEO Work Behind the Growth
Local SEO is not one big change. It is a set of fundamentals done consistently, month after month. Here is the work that went into this website.
- A dedicated page for each core service. Every service the business wants to sell got its own page targeting the keywords customers actually search, instead of one page listing everything.
- Location targeting across the service area. Pages and content were built around the cities and areas the business serves, so the site could rank for searches that include a location.
- Google Business Profile optimization. The profile's categories, services and details were kept complete and consistent with the website.
- Technical cleanup. Indexing issues, page titles, meta descriptions and internal links were fixed so Google could crawl and understand every page.
- Ongoing content and updates. Pages were improved and expanded over time rather than published once and forgotten.
7Why Direct Traffic Grows With SEO
Direct traffic grew 271% over the same three months, from 474 sessions to 1,760. It is fair to ask why that belongs in an SEO case study.
Direct visits often start somewhere else. A homeowner finds the business in a Google search, saves the site or remembers the name, and comes back later by typing the address. Some of those return visits show up as direct traffic in Google Analytics 4. As more people find a business through search, more of them come back on their own.
- Return visitors: People who first found the business through search and came back directly to call or request a quote.
- Brand recognition: The more often the business shows up in search results, the more people type its name or address directly.
- Why we show both: We report organic search separately in section 4 so you can see the SEO growth on its own, and blended with direct so you can see the full picture.
8What Made the Difference
Here is what you can take from this case study and apply to your own local service business.
- Measure SEO without paid traffic: If your business runs ads, pull paid channels out of your reports. Otherwise you cannot tell whether your SEO is working.
- Compare the same months year over year: Local service businesses are seasonal. Comparing July to July tells you far more than comparing July to March.
- Build a page for every service: Google ranks pages, not businesses. A dedicated page gives each service a real chance to rank.
- Stay consistent: The growth in this account compounded month after month. SEO rewards steady work over time, not one big push.
- Judge SEO by engagement and key events too: Organic visitors in this account engaged more and converted at a higher rate than paid visitors. That is traffic worth building.
