The easiest way to connect Shopify to Google Merchant Center is the free Google & YouTube app, which syncs your products to Merchant Center, claims your domain and can set up Google Ads conversion tracking. I set this up for ecommerce clients and on our own Shopify store. The parts that need the most care are your store policies, your GTINs and your conversion tags.
This guide walks through the current setup step by step, from installing the app to conversion tracking that does not double count. If you want us to handle it, see our ecommerce Google Ads management service.

1What the Google & YouTube App Does
Google & YouTube is Shopify's official Google sales channel, and Shopify notes that the channel is managed by Google. Once it is connected, your products sync to Google Merchant Center automatically, which makes them eligible for free listings, Shopping ads and Performance Max.
The app also creates or links your Merchant Center account, claims your domain, imports shipping rates and connects Google Ads conversion tracking and Google Analytics 4.
If you are new to Merchant Center itself, start with my guide on what Google Merchant Center is and how to set it up. This post focuses on the Shopify side.
Question to Answer:
Do you already have a Merchant Center account, or will the app be creating a new one for your store?
2Store Requirements to Fix First
Fix these before you install. Shopify lists the Google & YouTube requirements, and they line up with what Merchant Center checks for misrepresentation:
- No password page: Your online store cannot be in private mode.
- A payment provider: Set up a valid payment provider in your Shopify admin.
- Refund policy and Terms of Service: Both must exist and be linked in your footer menu.
- Contact information: Put at least one method on a page customers can see: mailing address, phone number, email or contact form.
- Shipping: Ship to a supported country and sell in that country's currency. Only rates in your General shipping profile sync, and you need a shipping zone for each country you target.
Shopify's list does not name a shipping policy page, but I recommend adding one under Settings, then Policies, and linking it in the footer. Google's misrepresentation policy expects shipping costs and delivery times to be clear before checkout.
Question to Answer:
Are your refund policy, shipping policy, Terms of Service and contact page all linked in your store's footer?
3Install the App and Connect Merchant Center
Here is the process, based on Shopify's Google & YouTube setup guide.
- Install the channel. Go to the Google & YouTube app page and install it.
- Connect your Google account. In Shopify, go to Sales channels, then Google & YouTube, and click Connect Google Account. Use the Google account that owns your Merchant Center and Google Ads accounts.
- Connect Merchant Center. Pick an existing account from the dropdown, or click Create new. Under Verify it's you, enter your phone number, click Get code and enter the 6-digit code.
- Choose countries and languages. To pick markets yourself, open Countries and Languages, click Manage and turn off Automatic sync.
- Set up shipping. Click Manage next to Shipping settings and choose Automatically import shipping settings or set them up manually in Merchant Center.
- Set title and description preferences. Choose which title and description the app sends to Google.
Shopify says your store's domain is claimed automatically unless another Google account already claimed it. This comes up when an old agency or a previous feed app set up Merchant Center. You can transfer the claim to the account you are connecting.
After setup, the first sync can take up to 24 hours. Later changes usually sync within a few hours.
Question to Answer:
Is your domain already claimed by another Merchant Center account, and do you have access to it?
4How Shopify Fields Map to Merchant Center
Neither Shopify nor Google publishes one complete field map for the app, but their help pages document the fields that matter most. Here is how they line up:
| Shopify field | Merchant Center attribute | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Title | title | Main title or SEO title, based on your app settings |
| Description | description | Required to sync. Main or SEO description, based on your app settings |
| Vendor | brand | No placeholders like "N/A" or "Generic" |
| Barcode (variant) | gtin | Added in the Inventory section of each variant |
| Media | image_link | At least one image required |
| Variant options | size, color | Google says these can come from your variants |
| Google product category | google_product_category | Set in the Google & YouTube app |
| MPN | mpn | Entered in the app for products with no barcode |
Sources: Google's Shopify data quality fixes and Shopify's product syncing guide.
Google says to check the Settings tab of the app to see whether your main title and description or your SEO title and description are sent. For product type, neither help center documents exactly how the app maps it, so open a synced product in Merchant Center and check what came through.
Write titles for search, not for your theme. My guide to Google Shopping feed attributes covers how.
Question to Answer:
Is your app set to send the main title or the SEO title, and which one is written better for search?
5How to Add GTINs in Shopify
A GTIN is the barcode number on a product, such as a UPC in the US. Google uses it to match your product to its catalog, and missing identifiers are one of the most common reasons products get limited or disapproved.
- Open the product. In Shopify, go to Products and open the product.
- Enter the barcode. In the Inventory section of each variant, enter the full number from the manufacturer or your GS1 account in the Barcode field. Do not make one up.
- Use bulk edit for big catalogs. Shopify's bulk editor or a product CSV import is faster than editing one product at a time.
If a product has no GTIN, add the brand and MPN in the Google & YouTube app instead. For handmade or custom items, Google says you can go to Sales Channels, Google, Overview, Product feed, Manage Products and set the "Custom product" column to True. That tells Google no identifier exists.
Google also flags GTINs that do not match the brand, so if you resell other brands, the Vendor field needs to be that brand, not your store name.
Question to Answer:
How many of your products have an empty barcode field, and which of them actually have a manufacturer GTIN?
6Fixing Sync Issues and Products Not Approved
Products only sync if they are available to both the Online Store and the Google & YouTube channel. To see why a product is not syncing, open it in Shopify and click Google under Sales channels.
Here are the common issues and how Google says to fix them:
- Missing or invalid GTIN: Add the barcode, or the brand and MPN, as covered above.
- Invalid Google product category: Use the numeric ID or the full category path, not just the last segment.
- Excessive capitalization: Rewrite the title in sentence or title case.
- Image issues: Use a clean main image with no logos, text or promotional overlays. My news post on the Merchant Center 500x500 image requirement covers the latest size change.
- Misrepresentation warnings: Usually a policy page or contact page problem, not a product problem.
To edit product data, Google points to Sales Channels, Google, Overview, Product status, Manage Products. Google says a product review can take 3 to 5 business days. Account warnings get reviewed automatically at the end of a 28-day warning period. For a suspension, use Request re-review in the app's Settings tab, or request a review from the Needs attention area in Merchant Center.
Keep in mind, Shopify Support can help with the app, but Merchant Center suspensions go through Google.
Question to Answer:
What are the top three issues on your Needs attention tab, and how many products does each one affect?
7Linking Google Ads
You need an existing Google Ads account, and the Google account you connected to the app needs admin access to it. In the app, find the Advertise your products with Google Ads banner and click Get started. In the Set up your Performance Max campaign section, pick your account and click Connect.
The app will offer to build a Performance Max campaign for you. That works fine for a first campaign, but I recommend building campaigns inside Google Ads instead, so you control the structure, asset groups and listing groups from day one. My Performance Max guide and the Google Shopping ads guide cover both campaign types, and Shopping campaign structure for retailers shows how to split products by margin.
Question to Answer:
Will you let the app create your first campaign, or build it yourself in Google Ads so you control the structure?
8Shopify Google Ads Conversion Tracking
You have two main options for Shopify Google Ads conversion tracking.
Option 1: the app's built-in conversions. When you link Google Ads, Google says purchase, add to cart and checkout started are the suggested default conversion actions. You can click Manage to edit them, point an event at an existing conversion action, or add a custom conversion ID and label. You can also turn on enhanced conversions under Settings, Google Ads settings. For most stores, this is the setup I recommend. It reads Shopify's checkout events directly, and it is the setup Google documents for Shopify.
Option 2: your own Google tag or Google Tag Manager. This gives you more control and makes sense if you already run GTM for other platforms. On Shopify's current checkout, custom tracking runs through custom pixels under Settings, Customer events, since scripts on upgraded Thank you pages no longer run. My guide to setting up Google Ads conversion tracking covers the general process.
The honest note on double counting. If you run both, every sale can be counted twice. Google tells you to remove previously installed duplicate tags after moving to the app, including custom pixels, checkout additional scripts and code in theme.liquid with identifiers like gtag, AW- or GTM-. Then check Goals, Conversions in Google Ads and make sure only one purchase action is set as primary. A quick test: if Google Ads shows close to double the purchases Shopify recorded from Google last week, you have a duplicate.
Smart Bidding learns from this data. Once tracking is right, use the ROAS calculator to set a target, and read what ROAS is if you need a refresher.
Question to Answer:
How many purchase conversion actions are set as primary in your Google Ads account right now?
9When to Use a Feed App or Supplemental Feed
The native app works fine for most small and mid-size stores. You will outgrow it when you need more control over your data than Shopify's fields allow.
- You need custom labels: Margin, best seller or seasonal labels for splitting campaigns.
- You want rules: Adding the brand and product type to every title, or changing values in bulk without editing Shopify.
- You need extra attributes: Category-specific fields or values stored in metafields.
Start with a supplemental data source before you pay for a feed app. In Merchant Center, go to Settings, Data sources, open the Supplemental sources tab and choose Add supplemental product data. A Google Sheet keyed to the product ID can add custom labels or fix titles on top of what the app sends, per Google's data source guide. A dedicated feed app earns its cost when you need rules across thousands of products or multiple channels.
Once the feed is clean, see my post on spotting underperforming products in Shopping ads, and plan ahead with holiday Shopping ads campaigns.
Question to Answer:
Is there a field you need in your feed, like a custom label or a better title, that Shopify cannot send today?
10Frequently Asked Questions
How do I connect Shopify to Google Merchant Center?
Install the Google & YouTube app from the Shopify App Store, go to Sales channels, then Google & YouTube, click Connect Google Account, and select or create a Merchant Center account. Your products then sync automatically, with the first sync taking up to 24 hours.
Where do I add a GTIN in Shopify?
Add it in the Barcode field in the Inventory section of each product or variant. If the product has no GTIN, add the brand and MPN in the Google & YouTube app, or mark it as a custom product.
Does the Google & YouTube app track Google Ads conversions?
Yes. When you link Google Ads, the suggested default conversion actions are purchase, add to cart and checkout started. If you also have your own Google tag or GTM purchase tag, remove the duplicate so each sale is only counted once.
In Summary
Connecting Shopify to Google Merchant Center comes down to clean store policies, a claimed domain and complete product data. Fix your refund policy, contact page and shipping first, install the Google & YouTube app, then fill in vendor, barcode and Google product category for every product.
From there, link Google Ads, pick one source of purchase conversions, and move to a supplemental feed or feed app only when you need custom labels or rules. If you want help, see our ecommerce Google Ads management service or schedule a free consultation. Management starts at $750 a month.
