Google Ads competitive analysis tools tell you exactly who you are bidding against and what they are doing to win. You do not need a stack of expensive software to figure this out. You need two tools: Google Ads Auction Insights, which is free and built into your account, and SpyFu, which starts at $39 per month. Auction Insights shows you the domains fighting you in the same auctions. SpyFu shows you their keywords, their ad copy, and an estimate of what they spend every month. This guide walks you through how to use both so you stop optimizing blind and start making decisions backed by real numbers.

1The Two Tools You Actually Need
Most competitive analysis fails because people guess. They assume they know their competitors, and they assume they know what those competitors are bidding on. Auction Insights and SpyFu remove the guessing. Together they cover the two questions that matter most: who is bidding against me, and what are they doing to win.
- Google Ads Auction Insights (Free): A native report inside Google Ads that reveals the exact domains competing for your ad placements, using metrics like Impression Share, Overlap Rate, and Position Above Rate.
- SpyFu (Starting at $39/month): A competitive intelligence platform with more than 18 years of historical search data that exposes competitor keywords, ad copy variations, landing pages, and estimated PPC budgets.
Here is why this matters in practice. Identifying the search terms your competitors bid on stops you from wasting budget on low-intent keywords. Studying their ad history shows you which hooks and offers actually resonate with your shared audience. Tracking their spending patterns reveals gaps in their bidding schedules that you can exploit. The workflow is simple: pull your top overlap competitors from Auction Insights, drop those domains into SpyFu to download their keyword and ad data, then adjust your own bids, budgets, and ad copy based on what you find.
Question to Answer:
Do you actually know which domains you are competing against in the auction, or are you assuming based on your real-world competitors?
2Watch: Quick Google Ads Competitive Analysis
This video walks through the full process end to end. You will see how to pull competitors out of Auction Insights and then use SpyFu to reverse engineer their keywords, ad copy, and estimated budgets.
Question to Answer:
After watching, which of your competitors will you look up first in SpyFu?
3Auction Insights: Finding Your True Competitors
You find the Auction Insights report in the Google Ads sidebar. Click Insights and reports and then select Auction insights. At the account level, this report displays every business directly competing for your ad placements across the network.
For more specific data, navigate to the Campaigns, Ad groups, or Search keywords pages, select the specific items you care about, and click the Auction insights button. This filters the report down to the exact Search and Shopping campaigns you selected, which is far more useful than looking at your whole account at once.
For Performance Max campaigns, the competitor data lives in the Insights tab at the account or campaign level. Google keeps ad appearance history there dating back to November 2021, and the report needs a minimum search impression share of 10 percent before it shows you anything actionable.
One thing to keep in mind: the domains you see here are your auction competitors, and they are often not the same businesses you think of as your real-world competitors. That is exactly why this report matters. It shows you who is actually taking your traffic, not who you assume is.
Once you have your list, cross-reference the top domains in the Google Ads Transparency Center to see their active ad text and selling points. Run this on your branded terms too, so you catch any competitor bidding on your brand name and poaching your most profitable traffic.
Question to Answer:
Have you sorted your Auction Insights report to see which specific domains overlap with you most often?
4The Auction Insights Metrics That Matter
The report gives you several metrics that benchmark your performance against competing domains. These are the ones that drive real decisions.
- Impression Share: The percentage of eligible search impressions your ads captured. This is your market share. A domain sitting at 80 to 100 percent Impression Share is a heavily funded market leader dominating the auction.
- Overlap Rate: How often a competitor ad appeared in the same auction as yours. An Overlap Rate above 60 percent means that domain is a direct competitor going after your exact audience. Sort by this metric first to find your most direct threats.
- Position Above Rate: The percentage of auctions where a competitor ranked in a higher ad slot than you. A high number here means they are either bidding aggressively or running a stronger keyword Quality Score.
- Outranking Share: How often your ad ranked higher than a competitor, or showed when theirs did not. This is your direct scoreboard against each domain.
- Top of Page and Absolute Top of Page Rate: These measure Search placements only. They tell you how often ads land at the top of the page and in the very first position.
Watch how these numbers move over time. If a competitor Overlap Rate suddenly climbs, they most likely scaled up their budget, and that footprint shows up here before it shows up anywhere else. You can also segment the data by device or time of day to spot the exact windows, like early afternoon, when a competitor exhausts their daily budget and drops out. Those windows are cheap bidding opportunities for you.
Do Not Blindly Chase the Top Spot
- Securing the absolute top position typically raises your CPC by 35 to 45 percent compared to positions 2 and 3.
- Conversion rates historically only improve by 8 to 12 percent when you move to that top spot.
- Run the math before bidding for the number one slot. Positions 2 or 3 are often more profitable.
Question to Answer:
Which of your competitors has both a high Overlap Rate and a high Position Above Rate against you right now?
5Using SpyFu to Extract Keywords and Ad Copy
Auction Insights hands you the domains. SpyFu tells you what those domains are actually bidding on. Enter your own domain into the SpyFu search bar and it populates the Top Paid Competitors report, showing you which sites have the highest keyword overlap with you. To go deeper on a specific competitor you found in Auction Insights, use the Custom Add feature to load up to 18 years of historical PPC data for that business.
Two SpyFu features do most of the heavy lifting:
- The Kombat Tool: Compares your domain against two competitors and builds a Venn diagram of shared search terms. Use the Consider Buying filter to pull the profitable keywords your competitors bid on that are completely missing from your campaigns.
- The Ad History Tab: Catalogs every ad variation a competitor has run for a given keyword over time. The keywords that keep appearing at the top of their chart are their highest-value, most profitable terms.
Learn to read the Ad History grid. A color change means a competitor launched a new ad copy split test. A revert to a previous color signals that the test failed. Short-lived ads point to abandoned experiments. Here is the part that saves you the most time: any ad variation that has run consistently for six months or longer is a proven winner. Someone spent real money testing dozens of options before landing on that one, so you do not have to repeat their experiment. You can start from their winning angle and improve on it.
Question to Answer:
Which competitor ad has been running unchanged for six months or more, and what offer does it lead with?
6Estimating a Competitor Monthly Budget
SpyFu also lets you estimate what a competitor spends. Export their top 10 keywords from the Top Ad Competitors report and look at three columns: Total Monthly Clicks, Percent Paid Clicks, and Phrase CPC. Then run the formula.
| Input | Example Value |
|---|---|
| Total Monthly Clicks | 10,000 |
| Percent Paid Clicks | 30% |
| Phrase CPC | $2.50 |
| Estimated Monthly Spend | $7,500 |
The formula is Total Monthly Clicks multiplied by Percent Paid Clicks multiplied by Phrase CPC. In the example above, 10,000 clicks at a 30 percent paid ratio and a $2.50 CPC comes out to $7,500 in estimated monthly spend for that single keyword. Exclude branded keywords from this math so you are measuring true competitive acquisition spend rather than cheap brand clicks.
The PPC Research tab tracks these spending trends over time. When you see an uncharacteristic spike on top keywords, that competitor is aggressively scaling a campaign that is working for them, and it is worth investigating what changed.
Question to Answer:
What is the estimated monthly spend of your single biggest overlap competitor once you strip out their branded terms?
7Combining Auction Insights and SpyFu Data
Neither tool is complete on its own. Auction Insights identifies the competitor. SpyFu reveals their exact keyword list and estimated spend. When you put them side by side, you can tell whether a competitor is beating you because of a massive budget or because of smarter keyword targeting.
Pay close attention to your lost impression share breakdown. A high Lost IS (Rank) means you need to rewrite ad copy and improve landing pages, and SpyFu gives you high-performing competitor examples to model. A high Lost IS (Budget) means you should compare your daily spend against SpyFu budget estimates to see if you are simply underfunded on the keywords that matter.
Build one comparison table so all of this lives in a single view. Organizing Impression Share, Overlap Rate, and estimated monthly spend together makes your next move obvious.
| Competitor | Impression Share | Overlap Rate | Est. Monthly Spend | Top Keyword Theme |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Competitor A | 45% | 75% | $5,000 | Product Features |
| Competitor B | 30% | 40% | $12,000 | Pricing / Discounts |
| Your Brand | 55% | N/A | $8,000 | Solutions / Benefits |
Segment your exported Auction Insights data by device and time of day inside this framework. Doing so isolates the exact bidding windows where a major competitor powers down, and those are the moments you can buy cheaper clicks.
Question to Answer:
Is your top competitor winning on budget or on targeting, and which of your lost impression share numbers proves it?
8Turning Competitor Data Into Campaign Changes
Data is worthless until it changes what you do. Here is how to act on what you pulled.
- Add the mid-tail keywords they ignore: Look for terms in SpyFu with moderate search volume and low CPCs that larger competitors overlook. Adding these to your campaigns drives cost-efficient conversions.
- Bid into their off-peak windows: Adjust your bid schedules to the hours when budget-constrained competitors drop out. Outbidding a competitor with high Impression Share but a low Position Above Rate during their off-peak hours wins you the top spot at a fraction of the usual cost.
- Fix Quality Score before you raise bids: Improving a keyword Quality Score to 7 or higher lifts your Ad Rank about as much as a 30 to 40 percent bid increase, and it does not cost you more per click. Read our guide on improving Quality Score to lower CPC.
- Do not overpay for position one: Raising bids just to hold the number one slot usually ruins your cost per acquisition. Positions 2 and 3 are frequently more profitable over the long run.
Fold these moves into your broader strategy. If you are unsure how aggressive to be, our breakdown of Google Ads bidding strategies covers when to bid up and when to hold. It also pays to mine competitor search terms for negatives. Our guide to Google Ads negative keywords shows you how to cut the junk traffic your competitors waste money on.
Question to Answer:
What is the single lowest-cost keyword your competitor bids on that you have not added yet?
9Get Help From Surfside PPC

Question to Answer:
Do you want to run this competitive analysis yourself, or hand it to a team that does it every day?
In Summary
Google Ads Auction Insights and SpyFu remove the guesswork from competitive analysis. Auction Insights is free and flags the exact domains outranking you in the auction, using Overlap Rate, Impression Share, and Position Above Rate to show who is really taking your traffic. SpyFu, starting at $39 per month, hands you their keyword lists, their ad history, and an estimate of what they spend, so you can reverse engineer what is working before you spend a dollar testing it yourself.
The point is not to copy your competitors. The point is to extract the data that proves what works, then build a better campaign on top of it. Sort your Auction Insights report by Overlap Rate, load your top overlap domains into SpyFu, and pull their keywords, ad copy, and budget estimates into one comparison table. Then act: add the cheap keywords they ignore, bid into their off-peak windows, and fix your Quality Score before you raise a single bid.
Make this a monthly habit. Track Impression Share, Overlap Rate, and Outranking Share for your top 5 to 10 competitors so you catch their aggressive moves before they cost you market share. Whether you run the analysis yourself or hire Surfside PPC to manage it, using free Auction Insights data is the fastest first step toward a lower cost per lead.
