Google Is Building Calculators Inside AI Overviews

Google is building interactive calculators inside AI Overviews with Generative UI

Google is expanding Generative UI from AI Mode into AI Overviews, which means Google can now build interactive tools like calculators directly into the search results for a lot more people. The rollout started in August 2026 in English globally, with full availability expected in the coming weeks. If your traffic depends on a calculator, converter, or comparison page, this is the update to pay attention to this week.

What Generative UI Is

Generative UI builds custom visual layouts and interactive tools on the fly instead of returning static text. Rather than describing an answer, Google creates something you can actually use inside the result.

Google's own demonstrations included an interactive pH scale visualization, a refined version of that scale plotting citrus fruits on it, and a mortgage calculator in AI Mode that lets you compare loan terms. The pattern is the same in each case. A question that used to send you to a page with a tool on it now gets a tool built into the result.

What Actually Changed

  • The surface expanded. Generative UI has been in AI Mode since November 2025. It is now moving into AI Overviews, which is a much bigger surface with far more everyday traffic behind it.
  • The timing. The rollout began in August 2026, with full availability expected in the coming weeks.
  • The availability. It is fully launched globally in English in AI Mode. In AI Overviews it has started rolling out. English only for now.
  • The context. Google announced in May 2026 that the capability would become free for all Search users over the summer, so this is the follow through on that.

Who Should Actually Be Worried

AI Mode is a destination people choose to visit. AI Overviews sits at the top of ordinary search results, in front of people who never opted into anything. Moving a feature from the first to the second is what turns it from an experiment into a traffic problem.

The sites most exposed here are the ones whose value is a tool rather than an explanation. If a page of yours ranks because it holds a mortgage calculator, a unit converter, a pricing comparison, or a simple estimator, Google can now generate its own version of that inside the result. The user gets the number they came for and never needs your page.

Sites built on judgment, real data, and actual experience are in a much better spot. Google can generate a mortgage calculator. It cannot generate your local pricing data, your client results, or your read on which option makes sense for a specific situation.

I would not panic over this one, but I would stop treating a free tool as a long-term traffic strategy. If the only reason someone lands on a page is to run one calculation, that page was always borrowed traffic.

What To Do About It

Here is the process.

  1. Find your tool pages in Search Console. List every page that gets traffic because of a calculator, converter, or comparison function rather than because of the writing around it. Those are your exposed pages.
  2. Check what those pages are actually worth. Look at conversions, not sessions. A calculator page pulling 20,000 visits and zero leads was never the asset you thought it was, and losing it costs you nothing real.
  3. Add what cannot be generated. Wrap your tools in the things a generated widget has no access to. Your own pricing data, your process, real examples, and a specific recommendation for a specific situation.
  4. Make your tool worth the click. A generated calculator handles one simple calculation. Saved inputs, multiple scenarios side by side, exportable results, and industry-specific defaults are all reasons to use yours instead.
  5. Watch impressions against clicks. The signal to look for is impressions holding steady while clicks fall. That is Google answering on your behalf, and it shows up in the data well before it shows up in your revenue.

At the very least, start tracking where you show up in AI results now rather than after your traffic moves. My walkthrough on GEO keyword research and tracking your AI visibility covers how to set that up.

There is a paid search angle here too. Anything that expands what appears above the traditional results changes how much of the page your ads are competing for, which is worth factoring into how you plan your Google Ads spend against organic traffic you may not keep. We will keep tracking this one in the news section as the rollout finishes.

Question to Answer:

Which of your pages get traffic because of a tool rather than because of the content, and how many leads or sales do those pages actually produce?

In Summary

Generative UI moving into AI Overviews means Google can build calculators and interactive comparisons directly into ordinary search results, in English globally, with the rollout finishing over the coming weeks. Pages that rank because they hold a simple tool are the ones at risk.

Audit your tool pages, find out whether they actually produce business, and build the parts Google cannot generate around them. Your own data, your own results, and a real recommendation are still yours alone.
