If your organic traffic is dropping or shifting, it is because the way people search is changing. Buyers are asking ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, and Perplexity to compare solutions instead of scrolling ten blue links, and those platforms are not chatbots any more. They are answer engines. This is about getting cited when a buyer asks an AI for a recommendation, and the framework IMS laid out for doing it.
IMS ran a free 60-minute executive training on April 14, 2026 aimed at founders, CEOs, and marketing leaders. The subject was Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO. If you are still only doing standard SEO and ignoring AEO, you are missing the first half of the customer journey.
How generative AI is changing search behavior
The way people find products and services is genuinely different now. Buyers ask Perplexity or Claude to compare solutions for them, and they often bypass traditional search engines and your homepage entirely.
I always tell my clients: you have to be where your customers are searching. If they are making their initial decisions inside a ChatGPT prompt, your website data needs to be what that AI is feeding them. As Solomon Thimothy from IMS put it, you have to structure your authority signals so these systems can recognize and trust you over your competitors.
The AEO Alignment Framework: signal, intent, and visibility
IMS introduced their AEO Alignment Framework, a three-part methodology that I think every digital marketer should be looking at right now. Here are the basics.
- Signal structuring. Clean up your technical site data and digital assets so AI models can see your expertise, credibility, and relevance.
- Intent mapping. Turn your old sales FAQs and support data into conversational content that sounds like the answers these engines are trying to generate. This is the same instinct behind building a content plan with AI.
- Visibility activation. Combine AEO, GEO, and standard SEO keyword research into one discovery strategy rather than three separate projects.
Work through that and you find the gaps a keyword-first strategy misses. You are making your site trustworthy enough for an AI to recommend it as a source.
Adapting your SEO strategy for the AI age
Stop treating SEO as a tactical thing you do for Google. It is a strategic requirement for your digital authority. The Q and A in the live session made clear how many businesses are struggling to stay visible as AI-mediated discovery takes over.
The roadmap is straightforward. Work out how answer engines interpret your content, then provide the most structured and authoritative answer available. That is what wins the citation.
You also need to know whether any of it is working, which means measuring AI visibility rather than guessing at it. That is a separate discipline, and it is covered in GEO keyword research and tracking your AI visibility.
Don't get left behind
IMS has been around since 2006, and they have shifted their focus heavily toward GEO and AEO because that is where discovery is heading. Whether you are a small business or a large agency, building these systems is how you stay findable in an AI-driven market.
In Summary
Answer engines now sit in front of traditional search for a lot of buyers, and being cited by them is a different job from ranking. The AEO Alignment Framework breaks it into three parts: structure your signals, map your content to real intent, and run AEO, GEO, and SEO as one strategy.
Start by checking whether AI platforms can read your site clearly at all. That is the gap most businesses have, and it is the cheapest one to close.
