Google Ads for law firms cost a median of $9.87 per click and $131.63 per lead, the highest of all 23 industries in WordStream's 2026 benchmark report. That data covers April 2025 to March 2026 and blends Google and Microsoft search campaigns. Your practice area and your city can push those numbers much higher or lower.
This guide breaks down what law firm Google Ads actually cost going into 2027, why legal clicks are so expensive, what the data says by practice area, and what Local Services Ads cost for attorneys. You will also get a simple way to set a budget and the four places most firms can lower their cost per signed case. For the full cross-industry numbers, see my Google Ads benchmarks by industry.
1Law Firm Google Ads Costs at a Glance
Here is the Attorneys & Legal Services row from the two most recent WordStream benchmark reports. The figures are medians, which the reports label as "averages."
| Channel | Metric | Legal median | All-industry median |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google and Microsoft search | Cost per click | $9.87 | $5.42 |
| Google and Microsoft search | Click-through rate | 5.87% | 6.64% |
| Google and Microsoft search | Conversion rate | 5.55% | 8.18% |
| Google and Microsoft search | Cost per lead | $131.63 | $66.69 |
| Facebook traffic campaigns | Cost per click | $0.69 | $0.60 |
| Facebook traffic campaigns | Click-through rate | 1.77% | 1.93% |

In short, a law firm pays almost twice the typical cost per lead, and legal searchers convert at a lower rate than average. Legal does not appear in the Facebook leads tables at all, likely because there were too few campaigns to report.
Question to Answer:
What is your firm's actual cost per click and cost per lead over the last 90 days, and how does it compare to $9.87 and $131.63?
2Why Legal Clicks Cost So Much
Google does not set the price of a legal click. Every search runs an auction, and your actual cost per click is what you need to beat the Ad Rank of the advertiser immediately below you. When many firms in the same city bid on the same handful of keywords, that floor goes up fast.
- One case can be worth a lot. A single signed personal injury or criminal defense case can pay for months of advertising, so firms are willing to bid aggressively.
- The keyword list is short. Most legal intent sits in a few phrases like "car accident lawyer" or "DUI attorney near me," so every competitor fights over the same searches.
- Directories and lead sellers bid too. You are not only competing with other firms. Legal directories and lead generation companies enter the same auctions.
- Quality changes the price. Google's Ad Rank page says higher quality ads can often lead to lower CPCs. A firm with a relevant ad and a strong landing page can pay less than a competitor for the same position.
That last point is the one you control. You cannot make your market less competitive, but you can make your ads and pages more relevant than the firm bidding next to you.
Question to Answer:
Are your most expensive keywords sending people to a page built specifically for that practice area?
3Google Ads Costs by Practice Area
The most recent practice-area breakdown is older. It comes from LocaliQ's legal search advertising benchmarks, and it uses data from April 2022 to March 2023, across 256 US search campaigns. LocaliQ last updated the page in July 2025, but the numbers themselves are from April 2022 to March 2023. Treat them as historical, not as current prices.
| Practice area | CTR | CPC | CVR | CPL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accidents & Personal Injury | 4.56% | $9.30 | 5.45% | $159.17 |
| Criminal Law | 4.51% | $12.30 | 9.90% | $101.49 |
| Bankruptcy Law | 6.23% | $11.70 | 13.56% | $82.27 |
| Estate & Probate (incl. Wills) | 5.17% | $7.92 | 9.65% | $72.24 |
| Family Law (incl. Divorce) | 4.70% | $7.69 | 8.52% | $103.54 |
| Tax Law | 4.96% | $11.82 | 13.30% | $120.30 |
| General Practice | 4.80% | $9.97 | 5.52% | $96.54 |
Source: LocaliQ, Legal Search Advertising Benchmarks. LocaliQ practice-area data from April 2022 to March 2023. Medians reported as "averages." DUI is not broken out.
Personal injury had the highest cost per lead of the practice areas at $159.17. Criminal law had the highest cost per click at $12.30, but it also converted at 9.90%, which kept its cost per lead lower. The 2026 all-legal median of $9.87 is newer than every number in this table, so use the table to compare practice areas against each other, not to set a price.
If you practice in one of these areas, I have dedicated pages for Google Ads for personal injury attorneys, criminal defense attorneys, DUI attorneys and family law attorneys.
Question to Answer:
Is your account split into separate campaigns by practice area, so you can see the cost per lead for each one?
4Legal Keyword Bid Ranges
You will see scary numbers quoted for legal keywords. Most come from Google Keyword Planner, and it is important to know what they measure. PPC.io pulled these from the Keyword Planner API with US targeting in July 2026. They are top-of-page bid ranges, not actual CPCs. PPC.io describes the metric as the auction's asking price for a top-of-page slot, not what a tuned account actually pays.
| Keyword | Monthly searches | Top-of-page bid range |
|---|---|---|
| truck collision attorney | 60,500 | $54 to $732 |
| houston maritime attorney | 210 | $8 to $750 |
Source: PPC.io, Most Expensive Keywords on Google. Google Keyword Planner top-of-page bid ranges, US, July 2026.
PPC.io also lists single figures for other legal terms, such as "DUI Defense Lawyer" at $114.02 and "Car Accident Lawyer Near Me" at $290.61. The publisher labels that list as directional and does not say whether each figure is a high-end bid or an average, so do not budget off it.
The gap between these ranges and the $9.87 median is the whole story. The median is what legal campaigns actually paid per click across all their keywords. A bid range is the top of the auction for one competitive phrase. Run your own keywords through Keyword Planner with your city selected to see the range in your market.
Question to Answer:
Have you checked the Keyword Planner bid ranges for your main practice-area keywords in your own city?
5Local Services Ads Cost per Lead for Attorneys
Local Services Ads charge per lead instead of per click. Google says you are charged for each valid lead, and that lead prices vary by location, job type, lead type and bidding mode. LSA is also moving into Performance Max with pay-per-lead goals, and manual maximum cost per lead bidding is no longer supported there.
There is no large legal LSA benchmark study. The best recent numbers come from one agency's client data. 39 Celsius published 2026 figures from its own managed attorney accounts, updated September 24, 2026. It does not say how many firms or markets are included.
| Practice area | LSA cost per lead (2026) | Google Ads cost per lead (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Immigration | $75 | $25 |
| Criminal defense | $225 | $636 to $747 (estimate) |
| Personal injury | $658 (phone calls), $258 (messages) | $306 |
Source: 39 Celsius, LSA vs Google Ads for Attorneys: 2026 Cost Per Lead Data. Single-agency client data; firm count and markets not disclosed.
Two caveats. The criminal defense Google Ads figure is a modeled estimate, because the agency does not currently run Google Ads for a criminal defense firm. And the personal injury LSA phone lead has climbed a lot, from $229 in 2021 to $658 now in that agency's accounts.
The takeaway is that LSA is not automatically cheaper for law firms. It depends on your practice area and on whether the lead is a call or a message. Never use a home services LSA average to plan a legal LSA budget.
Question to Answer:
Are you comparing your LSA and search leads by how many become signed cases, not only by cost per lead?
6How to Set a Law Firm Google Ads Budget
There is no credible survey of what law firms spend on Google Ads. Every number I found came from agency sales pages with no method behind it, so I am not going to give you one. The closest verified figure is not legal-specific: WordStream says the average small business spends about $3,000 per month on Google Ads, with no source or sample stated.
A better approach is to work backward from the number of leads you need. Here is an illustration using the 2026 legal medians. It shows the method. It is not a forecast for your firm.
- Pick a lead goal. Say you want 20 leads a month.
- Multiply by cost per lead. 20 leads times the $131.63 legal median is $2,632.60 a month.
- Convert to a daily budget. Google charges no more than 30.4 times your average daily budget in a month, so $2,632.60 divided by 30.4 is about $86.60 a day.
- Sanity-check with clicks. At the $9.87 median CPC, $2,632.60 buys about 266 clicks. At the 5.55% median conversion rate, that is about 15 leads, not 20. Each figure is a separate median, so they do not line up perfectly. Plan for the lower number.
- Carry it to signed cases. If, hypothetically, you sign one in four leads, 20 leads becomes 5 cases, or $526.52 per signed case. Use your own intake numbers here.
If you practice personal injury in a large metro, expect to need more than the median. Start with enough budget to get real data in your top practice area, then expand.
Question to Answer:
How many signed cases do you need each month, and what lead count and budget does that require at your close rate?
7How to Lower Your Cost per Signed Case
The metric that matters is not cost per click. It is cost per signed case. These four areas move it the most.
- Negative keywords. Legal searches pull in a lot of junk: "free legal advice," "pro bono," "law school," "paralegal jobs," and searches for the wrong practice area. Review your search terms report every week and add negatives. My guide on using the search terms report for negative keywords walks through it.
- Call tracking. Many legal leads come in by phone. If you are not tracking calls from ads, your conversion data is wrong and Smart Bidding is guessing. Set up phone call tracking and count only calls long enough to be real conversations.
- Intake. This is where most firms lose money. A lead that rings to voicemail after hours is a lead you paid for and gave away. Answer fast, follow up the same day, and track which leads sign so you can feed that data back into Google Ads.
- Landing pages. Send each practice area to its own page with one clear call to action, your phone number at the top and proof that you handle that exact type of case. Relevance raises quality, and Google says higher quality can often lead to lower CPCs.
For more on running the account itself, read my guide to PPC management for law firms and the broader law firm marketing strategy guide. If you would rather hand it off, see Google Ads for law firms or the full law firm marketing agency page. Management starts at $750 a month, the first month includes setup, your ad spend is paid directly to Google, and I manage every account personally. Bundles are on the pricing page.

8Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Google Ads click cost for a law firm?
The median cost per click for Attorneys & Legal Services was $9.87 in WordStream's 2026 report, covering April 2025 to March 2026. That was the highest of 23 industries. Competitive keywords in large cities can have Keyword Planner top-of-page bid ranges in the hundreds of dollars, but those are asking prices, not what accounts typically pay.
What is the average cost per lead for lawyers on Google Ads?
The median cost per lead for legal was $131.63 in the 2026 report, the highest of all industries. Older LocaliQ data from April 2022 to March 2023 ranged from $72.24 for estate and probate law to $159.17 for personal injury.
Which practice area has the most expensive Google Ads?
In LocaliQ's April 2022 to March 2023 data, criminal law had the highest cost per click at $12.30, and personal injury had the highest cost per lead at $159.17. Personal injury keywords also show some of the highest Keyword Planner bid ranges, such as $54 to $732 for "truck collision attorney" in July 2026.
Are Local Services Ads cheaper than Google Ads for attorneys?
It depends on the practice area. One agency's 2026 client data from 39 Celsius showed criminal defense LSA leads at $225, while personal injury LSA phone leads cost $658 compared with $306 for Google Ads leads. The firm count behind those numbers is not disclosed.
How much should a law firm spend on Google Ads per month?
No credible survey of law firm budgets exists. Work backward from your goal instead. As an illustration, 20 leads at the $131.63 legal median is $2,632.60 a month, or about $86.60 a day. Adjust for your practice area, your city and your intake close rate.
In Summary
Law firms pay more for Google Ads than any other industry, with a median of $9.87 per click and $131.63 per lead in the 2026 report covering April 2025 to March 2026. Practice area, city and lead type all change the real number, and the bid ranges you see quoted online are asking prices, not typical costs.
Set your budget from a lead goal, not a round number, and measure all the way to signed cases. From there, the fastest wins are negative keywords, call tracking, intake and practice-area landing pages. If you want a second set of eyes on your account, schedule a free consultation.
