I have been writing ad copy for years. Sometimes, I need a little bit of inspiration. While you shouldn’t write every single ad using ChatGPT, it can be great for inspiration and ideas. Most importantly, ChatGPT can generate additional ad copy for your campaign. With the right prompts and human review, it can help you run additional tests. I love writing my own ads and then using ChatGPT for ad copy variations that I can test against my own.

How To Write Effective Ad Copy With ChatGPT

1. Understand Your Offer and Educate ChatGPT About Your Product

Before drafting ad copy, get clear on what you’re promoting. What makes your product or service special? What benefits or features do you want to highlight? Gather key information about your offering so ChatGPT can turn it into compelling copy.

I recommend using ChatGPT to tell it about your product. The more information you give, the better the output will be.

For example, I will usually give the product name and a detailed product description along with product specs.

Give ChatGPT information to help improve your ad copy.

2. Pick Your Ad Platform and Format

You should use prompts based on where your ad will be placed, as character limits vary for headlines, description lines, and the ad text you can use. A Google responsive search ad has different limits than a Facebook ad or a LinkedIn ad, for example. Provide ChatGPT with the exact specifications so it tailors the copy.

3. Use Smart Prompts With Character Limits

Prompt ChatGPT with sentences like “Write 3 Google Ads headlines that are 30 characters or less for my shoelace website.” The more precise your prompts, the better the output. You may have to adjust the character limits because your outputs won’t always be perfect in terms of character count. Luckily, we can continue prompting until we get the output we are looking for.

4. Review and Refine the Copy

While ChatGPT delivers fast copy, always review it yourself. Tweak anything that doesn’t match your brand voice or anything that doesn’t sound natural. The AI-generated draft needs human review whether you are generating ad copy, social posts, or blog posts.

5. Test and Analyze Advertising Performance

Run A/B tests with ChatGPT copy vs. human copy. See which variants get more clicks and conversions. Use these learnings to improve prompts. Most ad networks will automatically serve your top-performing ads, so testing will only help improve your conversion rate over time. Every month, create new advertisements to improve your results.
